Pictures of Antwerp: the City Parc...
|
|
Antwerp's central Park (14 hectares) was build under the supervision
of architect E. Van Cuyck between 1867 and 1869. It was to replace
the former Spanish forts that had become obsolete due
to new military constructions built around the city at that time. It
is located near the railway station in the Jewish quarter of the
city. The park counts several statues and monuments, a playground
for children, a café and even some bunkers erected by the Germans
during WW II. In its middle you will find a pond whose water level
has dropped a lot due to the construction of underground parking
spaces and the tube, which cut off the water supply.
