The rabbit's pipe, called as such by the people of Antwerp, was based on a project by Ing. Van der Mensbrugge dating from 1919, this sub aqueous tunnel of 1.733 m long was decided by the Belgian government mid in the 20's and built by an organization called IMALSO (under the supervision of Ing. Thonet) between 1932 and 1933. On Sunday, September 10, 1933 it was opened to the public by King Albert the 1st and the Queen traveling by car through the new tunnel. Toll had to be paid to use it till August 1958. Always growing traffic led to the construction of other tunnels (Kennedy, Liefkenshoek) so that this tunnel is restricted to cars and buses by now.

Traveling through, direction Antwerp

The tiles have not changed ever since nor the railing (right)

Many years ago (in the 60's) many people were happy to see this sight: they passed the congestion!

Aside from the building, trees and the road markings & signal you could be in 1934!
